The morning and midday passed quickly and Terren soon found himself buried beneath calculations as he worked out the exact details of the Lundemai journey at a desk.

He had been there for a few hours and was about half through writing down all of the specifics. He accounted for distances between destinations, the time it would take to cross those distances, where they would stay, persons they could contact, and how much money they would need. It was a boring task, but necessary. An ill-planned trip was not something he wished to experience again. Knowing what to expect would help keep him alert to anything out of place, but writing all of it down on paper was giving his hand a cramp.

The door to the suite burst open and immediately his free hand went to his side. Liem’s bulky form shadowed him and the deepening scowl on his brother-in-law’s face did not bode well for the ensuing conversation.

Terren sighed and dropped his quill, stretching his fingers, and leaning back in his seat.

“What can I help you with, Liem?”

“I found out you and my sister are leaving in the morning to go traipsing across the two realms. I came to inquire if you had even attempted to convince her otherwise. Do you have any idea how dangerous your journey could be?”

“I am aware of the danger, definitely more so than you, but Kiira wished to visit places outside of her home. How could I deny her? This is her Lundemai as much as it is mine,” he replied, his voice edged, but polite.

Liem growled and leaned across the desk, getting as close as the hindering furniture would allow. The prince was close enough for Terren to notice the veins of emerald green that spiked through his caramel eyes. He narrowed his eyes at Liem’s obvious display of dominance.

“Simple, Terren, you say ‘no’ and then walk away. I do it all the time.”

Terren kept his face neutral. He could think of a few choice words, but kept silent. Kiira was not easy to simply say ‘no’ to, and he doubted Liem was as good at saying the word as he was claiming.

At his lack of response, Liem continued, “Danger can change location and form in an instant. I have attempted and cannot convince Kiira to let go of this lunatic journey. Since you will not be swayed either, understand this; if anything happens to my sister—anything at all—I promise you will not live long enough to regret not being able to protect her.”

I am done playing games. Splaying his fingers on the desk, Terren rose out of the chair, forcing Liem to lean back. There was brief flash of uncertainty in the prince’s eyes. Terren was not even slightly intimidated by Liem and made sure it was evident in his reply.

“First, I care for Kiira and will do everything to protect her. Second, I am well acquainted with the dangers this trip poses and am taking every precaution with the planning. I am accustomed to being aware of my surroundings and am always on alert.
